Swim Meet 101

Swim Meet 101 - How Does a Swim Meet Work?

  • There are 5 strokes, plus relays at each meet. The strokes are Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Individual Medley (one lap of each of the first 4 strokes)
  • Swimmers can swim in up to 3 strokes, plus 2 relays in each meet
  • Coaches can provide guidance as to which strokes your swimmer can swim successfully
  • Relay swimmers are picked by the coaches, however with Stoneleigh being a small team, normally anyone who wants to swim a relay can do so.
  • Swim meets consist of 52 individual events, 12 relay events, and normally run close to 2.5 hours.
  • Parents will need to declare (sign up) their swimmers for every meet. This is easily done online thru your account page. There are deadlines....declare by Wednesday night for Saturday meets, and Sunday nights for Wednesday meets!

Swim Meet 101 - The Schedule

  • Each season begins with Time Trials, which is essentially a practice swim meet. Just Stoneleigh swims, no other team involved. Time Trials this season is Wednesday evening, June 4th at our pool (rain date Saturday morning, June 7th).
  • Then we have 8 regular meets, each against a different swim team. Usually half are at Stoneleigh and half are away. The schedule will come out in April and be posted to our site. Meets are Saturdays at 8 am, and Wednesdays at 6 pm.
  • There are 2 end of season meets, Divisionals and All Stars. In order to qualify, swimmers must have swam in at least two League Sanctioned meets during the current season. For All Stars, swimmers must meet minimum qualifying times to swim in the meet. Divisionals is open to any swimmer who has zero or just 1 All Star qualifying time.
  • We will host an End of Season Party at the Stoneleigh Pool!
  • Swimmers are not required to attend swim meets, but are encouraged to swim in as many as possible!

Swim Meet 101 - Volunteering

Saving the best for last...swim meets don't run without a lot of parent volunteers. Stoneleigh does not provide staff to run the swim meets, all the manpower comes from the parents. Most parents discover, it's actually a lot of fun! There are a variety of volunteer roles to fill for each meet. Most roles are "meet only" roles, a few require some work outside of the meets, or some initial training. When you declare your swimmer for a meet, you can also select a volunteer role at the same time.
